Mass failure as 786,380 candidates fail 2018 WASSCE

The West Africa Examination Council (WAEC) has announced that out of 1,572,396 candidates that sat for the 2018 West African Senior School Certificate Examination May/June (WASSCE) for school candidates, only 786,016 candidates, representing 49.98 percent, obtained credits and above in minimum of five subjects including English and Mathematics.

The development is contrary to 2017 May/June WASSCE results where about 923, 486 candidates representing 59.22 percent obtained minimum of credits in five subjects and above including English Language and Mathematics.

Announcing the results for the examination on Wednesday, the Head of National Office, Mr. Olu Adenipekun, told journalists at a press briefing held at the WAEC Training and Testing Centre (WTTC) in Ogba-Ikeja, Lagos that 102,058 candidates representing 6.49 percent have a few of their results still being processed due to errors traceable to the candidates in the course of registration or writing the examination.

Adenipekun said a total of 1,578,846 candidates registered for the examination from 17,886 recognised secondary schools in Nigeria while 1,572,396 candidates sat the examination.

Of the total number of candidates that sat the examination, 1,328 candidates with varying degrees of special needs registered for the examination.

Out of this number, 251 were visually challenged, 783 had impaired hearing, 123 had low vision, 88 were spastic cum mentally challenged and 83 were physically challenged.

The Head of National Office further said that of the total number that sat the examination in Nigeria, 1,470,338 candidates representing 93.51 percent have their results fully processed.

Of the total candidates that sat the examination, 823,424, representing 52.35 percent were male while 748,972 presenting 47.63 percent were female.

He said, “Candidates who sat for the examination will be able to check the details of their performance on the Council’s results website:www.waecdirect.org within the next few hours.

“The Result checker PIN and Serial Number are contained on the flip side of the candidates’ CIVAMPENS Card issued to all candidates by WAEC and used by them during the the conduct of the examination”.
