Man Utd captain, Maguire faces trial next week after police arrest

Manchester United captain, Harry Maguire has appeared in a Greek court on Saturday, August 22 following his arrest on Friday, August 21.

Local reports, however, claim Maguire will face trial in front of a panel of three judges on Tuesday, August 25, having been charged with aggravated assault and bribery.

Until then, the world’s most expensive defender is free to travel in the UK and his lawyers will represent him in court next week.

The disgraced Manchester United captain has spent two nights behind bars after he and two other men became embroiled in a physical and verbal altercation with local Mykonos police during a raucous night out.

Maguire was originally detained in Mykonos before being transferred to Syros and made a brief court appearance on saturady, August 22.

The 27-year-old refused to answer questions as he departed the scene but his legal representative replied ‘right now, yes’ when asked if the England international remained a free man. Ole Gunnar Solskjear had granted his squad a two-week break following last Sunday’s Europa League semi-final defeat against Sevilla.

Maguire flew Greece with his fiance Fern Hawkins but was seen partying with his friends and several of his team-mates on social media earlier this week.

Daily Times gathered that events turned sour during the early hours of Friday morning when a fracas happened outside the Fabrica bar in the early hours with Greek police saying they were confronted by a group of individuals, including Maguire, when they tried to intervene in the altercation.

‘When the brawl was all sorted out, one of the two groups – with the football players – started verbally abusing officers,’ Petros Vassilakis, a police spokesman, said.

‘There were several policemen there. At some point, one of the three members of the group – they were aged 27, 28, and 29 – threw a swing at one of the policemen and a fight ensued.

All of the three were arrested but during the effort to do so, the other two, including the football player, got violent also.

They threw down at least two policemen, hit them with their fists and kicked them. ‘I can’t tell you what they were telling us. All English swear words against the authorities and against the work of the police. All three, including the football player, are being held in custody, locked up in Mykonos cell.’ United released a statement following the developments in Greece.

The club said: ‘Following the appearance in court today we note the adjournment of the case to allow the legal team to consider the case file. ‘Harry has pleaded not guilty to the charges. It would be inappropriate for the player or club to comment further while the legal process takes its course.’
