Man jailed 5 years for stealing N1.8m from bank

An Ikeja Chief Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday sentenced a 34-year-old man, Abdulhammed Ibrahim, to five years imprisonment for stealing N1.8 million.

The Chief Magistrate, Mrs B.O Osunsanmi, sentenced the accused without an option of fine.

“The accused is therefore sentence to two years imprisonment for count 1 and three years imprisonment for count 2 and it will run concurrently.

“It will serve as deterrent to others,’’ she ruled.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the convict was sentenced following his guilty plea.

The prosecutor, Insp Simeon Inoha, had told the court that the offences were committed on April 13 at FCMB Bank, Ogudu branch, Lagos.

According to the prosecutor, the accused and others now at large went to the banking hall under the pretext of paying in money into somebody’s account.

“The accused went to the bulk room to pay in money and in the process, he took N1.8million that was meant to be loaded inside an ATM machine.

“He there after left with the money,” he said.

Inoha said that the accused was discovered through the CCTV camera and his picture was printed while he was declared wanted.

“The accused was apprehended in a hotel after information reached the police that he lodged there,” he said.

Inuha said that the accused wrote in his statement that he and two other persons conspired to steal from the bank, adding that he was unaware of the where about of his accomplices.

“The money had been shared before the accused was apprehended but the police recovered some money from the accused,’’ he said.

The offences, according to the prosecutor, contravened Sections 285 and 409 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2011. (NAN).
