Man bags 5 months imprisonment for stealing cloths

A Karmo Grade 1 Area Court, Abuja, on Monday sentenced a 23-year-old man, Yusuf Sani, to five months imprisonment for stealing cloths. Sani, who resides at Jabi Garage, Abuja, was arraigned on a two-count charge of criminal trespass and theft, offences he admitted committing.

The judge, Mr Maiwa Inuwa, however, gave the convict N5, 000 option of fine.

Inuwa said that the punishment would have been more severe if he had not pleaded guilty and saved the court the pains of prolonged prosecution.

He warned the convict against taking to crimes again.

Earlier, the prosecutor, Mrs Ukagha Ijeoma, told the court that on May 28, the complainant, Vincent John, of Utako village, Abuja, reported the matter at the Utako Police Station.

Ijeoma told the court that the convict unlawfully entered the complainant’s dry cleaning shop on the same date and stole his customer’s cloths valued yet unknown.

He told the court that the complainant raised alarm when he discovered that his shop was burgled.

Ijeoma said that during police investigation, two sets of cloths were recovered from the convict and he admitted committing the offences.

He said that the offences contravened the provisions of Sections 348 and 287 of the Penal Code.

Following the plea of the convict, the prosecutor prayed the court to try him summarily, under Section 347 of the Administration of Criminal Justices Act, 2015.
