LP House of Assembly Candidate Killed in Imo
The Labour Party, LP, in Ngor Okpala state constituency, Mr Andrew Ugwuezumba for April 11th polls has been assassinated by gun men.
Ugwuezumba who hailed from Umunehi Village, Obiangwu Autonomous Community was said to have been shot dead about 08:00pm Tuesday night along Sam Mbakwe International Cargo Airport, (SMICA), and Road.
It was gathered that the deceased met his death that fateful day while returning home after a campaign rally at Umuowa Community; also in Ngor Okpala LGA.
Daily Times learnt that the assailants had trailed the LP candidate in an unmarked utility car from the venue of the rally until they double-crossed his car few poles away from his home town and shot him on the head and abandoned him in his pool of blood and fled.
Sources close to Ugwuezumba’s family confided that late LP candidate was in company with his cousin who was also attacked and sustained varied degrees of injuries and are currently receiving treatments at the Federal Medical Centre Owerri.
Also the same Tuesday night, another indigene of Ngor Okpala LGA, Mr Bennett Nnaji popularly known as “Coach” who hails from Umuekwune Umuorisha in Umuohiagu Autonomous Community was murdered by assassins.
Nnaji, 54years is the only son of his aged mother met his untimely death at Umuowa, few metres away from the Airport Junction, along Aba Road while returning home from his maternal home, Ndiama Ulakwo in Owerri North LGA.
The deceased who is a father of three resides in Abuja, had visited home during the general elections before he was cut down by dare-devil gunmen.
It also gathered by our correspondent that his decomposing body was only discovered on Wednesday morning by passerby as the assailants had chased him into the bush where they shot him severally and hid his head under his dark-coloured Mercedes Jeep with Reg. No. ABUJA-CN870RSH.
Daily Times reports that tension and palpable fear had gripped people of both Obiangwu and Umuohiagu communities and other neighboring communities in Ngor Okpala over the double assassination.
Reacting, the governorship candidate of LP in Imo State, Barr. Ngozi Olehi said that he was stunned to comment on the murder of Mr Ugwuezumba saying it is unfortunate and condemnable.
When contacted, the State Police Public Relations Officer, (PPRO), Mr. Andrew Enwerem, a Deputy Superintendent Police (DSP) said that he had not officially being briefed on the incident.
