Local govt autonomy: NULGE upbeat on implementation

As Nigerians await the enactment and immediate implementation of the 2017 budget, the executives of the National Union of Local Government Employees (NULGE) are optimistic President Muhammadu Buhari will ensure full local government autonomy and end the era of joint allocation accounts with state governments.
Speaking at the end of year celebration of retired local government employees, the chairman of the Lagos State chapter of NULGE, Ajose Semako, the president’s pronouncement is enough direction towards implementation.
The promise made by president Muhammadu Buhari during a visit of local government unions in September 2016 engendered much optimism over local government autonomy and constitutional amendment will free the local governments from the control of state governors.
Semako said President Muhammadu Buhari will keep to his words regarding the demands made by local government unions.
Semako, however, said most local government unions across the country have pledged their support towards achieving full autonomy.
