Live up to expectations- Canadian Envoy urges nurses, students, others

Student nurses and midwives have been urged to live up to their expectations of providing professional health care to the communities.
Canadian High Commissioner to Nigeria, Mr Christopher Thornley stated this while addressing students at the college of Nursing and Midwifery Bauchi during an official visit to college weekend.

“You should all be aware that there are high expectations on your profession, communities have high expectations for their health.
“So try and live up to expectations of looking after a pregnant women and her baby throughout a phase of antenatal care, during labor and birth and for up to 28 days after the baby has been born”.

“When you graduate you are expected to help to decrease infant mortality rates and pre-term birth and take all initiatives which are necessary in case of need and carry out where necessary immediate resuscitation, and help to decrease maternal mortality rate and pregnancy related sufferings in the communities.” He said
In her remarks the acting Provost of the College of Nursing and Midwifery Hajiya Rakiya Saleh Commended the people and Government of Canada for having foresight in providing valuables equipment and items needed for use by students and the college.

“Without this supports, there would have no students admitted and if there is no admission, there will be no skilled health manpower to graduate and address the issue of high maternal and newborn mortality in general and attainment of Universal health coverage in the state.”

Saleh said, “being partners in progress, we whole heartedly welcome you and your entourage to our baby college and hope the visit will encourage and convince you to increase the level of support given to us”.
Our correspondent gathered that the college have received support from Canada in the area of school equipments such as ICT materials, Books, three 16 seater buses for conveying students, laboratory and practical equipments.
