Learn CPR to save lives, Nurses urge Nigerians

Nursingworld Nigeria has urged Nigerians to learn cardiopulmonary resuscitation to strengthen the chain of survival.

This was made known during the commemoration of the 2016 World Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) held at the Department of Animal and Environment Biology, University of Port-Harcourt, Rivers State.

The CPR Day is aimed at strengthening the chain of survival skills in lay people to advanced health care providers. The only chance of survival a victim has is if someone knows how to call for an ambulance

and perform basic CPR Skills until a more advanced healthcare provider arrives on the scene.

According to the organizers of the event Nursingworld Nigeria, “CPR is a vital life skill that everyone, not just emergency personnel, should learn. The quicker CPR can be applied the better the chances of survival. World CPR Day is a great initiative to highlight the importance of learning to do CPR. Everybody should know how to do CPR, we need to strengthen the chain of survival.”

Nursingword Nigeria said, the Department of Animal and Environmental Biology in the university was chosen because it met the criteria to qualify for the free training after due consideration of the fact that it could not boast of having a member of staff having the requisite skills needed to react appropriately in an emergency.

Highlight of the events included: first aid basics, demonstration of CPR to the school staff members, teaching them how to call for an ambulance or for help and what to do while they wait, how to use an Automated External Defribilator (AED) if available.
