Lawmaker donates orhanages, Muslim community

Law maker, Essien Ayi, representing Akpabuyo/Bakassi/Calabar South Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives, has donated food items, toiletries and other materials to orphanages in Calabar.

The lawmaker on Tuesday visited the Infant Jesus Orphanage, The Motherless Babies Homes and the Pope John Paul II Samaritan Home for the Aged, where he distributed rice, beverages, yams, noodles and other food items.

Speaking at the Infant Jesus Orphanage, Ayi said that the donation was part of his tradition, love, care and affection for abandoned children.

Ayi, who said that the donation was part of his goodwill activities, noted that children in the homes deserved the support and care of all members of the society.

“I felt that while we are celebrating the Eid El-Fitri with our Muslims brothers, it is important to also visit the less privileged children and show them some love.

“I came from a disadvantaged home, very poor home; but by the grace of God, I am a man today. If God blesses us, we must see that as a sign to bless others.

“I am donating these items for the upkeep of the children. I pray that this will add more nutritional value to their health. I am also donating N100, 000 for their upkeep and medical care,’’ he said.

Responding, Rev. Sister Chinemerem Anyaebosin, in-charge of the home, thanked the lawmaker for always remembering the home in his goodwill activities.

Anyaebosin told the lawmaker that his magnanimity and that of others had kept the home running, adding that the food items and the cash would give the children a sense of belonging.

NAN reports that the lawmaker also visited the Motherless Babies Home and the Pope John Paul II Samaritan Home for the aged, where he also donated food and non-food items to them.

Similarly, Ayi also visited the Muslim Community at the Bogobiri area in Calabar, where he donated N1million in support of their mosque building project.

“I am here today to support this building project because of the love that I have for our Muslim brothers. Our style of worship may differ, but we all preach peace and unity.

“The Muslim community has been very supportive of me. They informed me that their former mosque had been demolished and that they were trying to erect another building for worship.

“I felt that as a representative, they too are my constituents. I am proud to make my token of N1 million towards the completion of the mosque,’’ he said.

Leader of the Hausa Community in Calabar, Alhaji Sarki Lawan, thanked the lawmaker for the donation, adding that the Muslim community would continue to support his activities in the state.
