LASUTH doctors walk against asthma

The Association of Resident Doctors (ARD), Lagos State University Teaching Hospital (LASUTH) recently held a sensitisation walk against asthma in Lagos.
Asthma is a common long term inflammatory disease of the airways of the lungs. It is characterized by variable and recurring symptoms, reversible airflow obstruction
The awareness walk commenced from LASUTH premises to Ikeja Local Government Secretariat, where they later screened residents freely for diverse ailments.
Speaking with Daily Times during the walk, President of the association, Dr Dade-Matthews Gbenga said, the walk is in commemoration of the association’s 9th edition of the Scientific Conference and Ordinary General Meeting (OGM) with the theme: Synergy in Medical Practice: A panacea to challenges in healthcare delivery.
“The association has been at the vanguard of advocating for improved healthcare in Lagos and Nigeria, while promoting the welfare of her members.”
Speaking on asthma, Dr Gbenga says, asthma is on the increase. “About 300 million people have asthma worldwide and about 1 in 13 adults are asthmatic and children are not left out. People with asthma belong to families, work in communities and are in schools. We need to sensitize our populace on the triggers of the condition. We need to keep our environment healthy and friendly so asthmatics can live longer and be more productive”.
He said, asthma can be treated and controlled if the patient has the right information.
While commending the doctors, one of the beneficiaries of the medical screening, Mr Olajide Olushola said, “I decided to leave my office for this screening to know my health status. It’s not all about being strong. Sometimes, you hear some people die while working but if you know your health status, you will know what to do.”
The president however urged Nigerians to attach priority to their health, adding that both patients and doctors have their roles to play in achieving a healthy nation.
