LASU churns out 17,695 graduates as only 8 made First Class

…VC promises automatic employment for First Class graduates

Eight out of about 17,695 graduating students of the Lagos State University (LASU) for the 2013/2014 and 2014/2015 academic sessions are graduating with First Class honours.

Vice Chancellor, Prof. Lanre Fagbohun, disclosed this on Thursday while addressing the press at the University’s Senate Chamber as part of activities lined up for the 20th convocation ceremony slated to take place from Thursday 19th May to 26th May 2016 at the main campus, Ojo Lagos.

According to him, the First Class graduands would be offered automatic employment while there would also be consideration for some of the students who made Second Class Upper Division. He added  that the graduating students were well baked in character and academics and could  compete with their counterparts anywhere in the world.

Prof. Fagbohun maintained that for the Full Time programme, 6,421 students are graduating out of which seven made First Class, 1,040 made Second Class Upper Division and 3,271 made Second Class Lower Division while 1,575 made Third Class and 206 made Pass.

For the External students, 8,784 students are graduating with one First Class and 1,016 Second Class Upper, 6990 Second Class Lower Division, 767 Third Class and 10 Pass.

173 Diploma students would also be graduating with 2,497 Higher Degrees. The VC stressed that all the graduating students have fulfilled the requirements for the award of the degrees.

The convocation lecture titled “Empowering African Languages for Socio-Cultural and Economic Development in the 21st Century. A Case for our Languages at Home and Abroad will be delivered by Prof Akinloye Ojo, a Professor of Comparative Literature and Director, African Studies Institute, University of Georgia, Athens, Georgia.

“The reason why we are bringing someone in the Diaspora is for cross fertilization of ideas, views and perspectives. Our guest lecturer is a Nigerian in the Diaspora who is coming home to share his point of view with us on how to move the Nation forward”, he said.

There height of the event is commissioning of projects by Governor Akinwumi Ambode, Visitor to the University as well as installation of Chancellor for the University. Projects to be commissioned include, the Faculty of Science Building, Faculty of Law Twin Lecture Theater Building as well as LASU Radio.
