Landmark Group to redevelop Port Harcourt tourist beach into premier destination

By Dooyum Naadzenga

Landmark Group has announced a partnership with the Rivers State Government to secure waterfront land for the redevelopment of the historic Port Harcourt Tourist Beach, aiming to transform it into a world-class leisure, hospitality, and tourism hub.

The announcement was made by Elsie Ogianyo, Brand and Corporate Communications Manager for Landmark Group, shortly after CEO Paul Onwuanibe revealed the company’s plans to expand operations into two African countries and three Nigerian states, along with relocating its headquarters from Lagos.

Onwuanibe expressed enthusiasm for the project, underlining Landmark Group’s dedication to creating exceptional leisure experiences in Port Harcourt. “We are excited to create unmatched and unforgettable leisure experiences by leveraging our international expertise alongside local knowledge from Lagos,” he stated.

The redevelopment is not merely about reviving a beloved resort; it also aims to establish a lasting legacy that highlights the cultural richness of Rivers State, stimulates socio-economic growth, and positions the resort as a premier destination in Africa.

Dr. Israel Lebura Ngbuelo, the Rivers State Commissioner for Culture and Tourism, voiced strong support for the initiative, emphasizing its potential to elevate the state as a leading tourist destination on the continent.

According to the statement, redevelopment work is set to begin in the first quarter of 2025, with phased completions anticipated by the end of that year. The project is expected to significantly boost the local economy by creating both direct and indirect job opportunities, fostering small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), and enhancing the local supply chain. Furthermore, it aims to diversify internally generated revenue (IGR) for Rivers State, driving economic development in the region.

The Landmark Port Harcourt Leisure Resort is expected to be the first of several prime tourism destinations planned by Landmark Group across West Africa, with a significant portion located in Nigeria. The company’s broader vision includes establishing a network of iconic leisure destinations throughout the region, promoting intra-Africa tourism and showcasing its substantial tourism potential.

In related news, Nairametrics previously reported that Landmark Africa, known for the Landmark Beach Resort in Lagos, is set to relocate its Nigerian headquarters and expand into new markets following the demolition of its Lagos resort in April 2024, which resulted in an estimated loss of $80 million. Despite this setback, Onwuanibe noted that Landmark Africa has not received compensation, unlike other affected properties, and criticized changes to the planned route of the Coastal Road that originally included the resort.

Onwuanibe highlighted the company’s economic contributions, stating that Landmark Africa contributed over N10 billion in taxes last year, reinforcing its importance to the local economy.
