Lagos Distributes Free 20,000 Gas Stoves to Residents.

The Lagos State Government has distributed over 20,000 Liquefied PG Cylinders to residents across the 57 LG/LCDA in the State in order to promote the use of cooking gas and reduce hazards associated with the use of firewood and kerosene.

The Commissioner for Energy and Mineral Resources, Engr. Taofeek Tijani disclosed this at the free distribution and sensitization/ public awareness programme to thirty one Local Government /Local Community Development Area, (LG/LCDA) at the blue roof, LTV ground Agidigbi, Lagos.

The Commissioner said the free distribution and sensitization programme will enable majority of the residents of the Local Government Area come to terms with the immense benefits in the usage of Gas thereby, preventing hazards faced by residents of the communities while using firewood, charcoal and kerosene.

Engr. Tijani noted that the distribution of free 3kg gas cylinders to residents of the State was a poverty alleviating scheme as about 20,000 gas cylinders has so far been distributed to residents without being partial to political party affiliations.

He disclosed that the initiative of Lagos State Government has gone beyond just distributing LPG cylinders freely but also the celebration of healthy, cleaner environment and wealth creation as well as mitigating against the effect of climate change in the State.

He revealed that so many countries in Africa such as the neighbouring countries like Ghana, Togo and the rest have embraced the use of cooking gas hence Nigeria with the largest reserve of the product in the sub region should not be left behind.

On her part, the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources, Mrs. Regina Iyabo Obasa disclosed that the Lagos State Government is determined to ensure that Lagos homes imbibe the use of LPG because of its inherent advantages.

She said further that Lagos State Government introduced Eko Gas Scheme as a domestic fuel of choice for Lagosians in order to reduce carbon emissions from the use of firewood and kerosene and because of its inherent advantages such as being cleaner, healthier, safe, more efficient and convenient to use for cooking.

The Permanent Secretary posited further “certain health problems like conjunctivitis, bronchitis and even heart diseases are on the increase and it is being suspected that the use of kerosene, fire wood and charcoal are likely causes of some of these diseases because of the fumes inhaled when used for cooking”.

She said it is In the light of these that the state government as part of its public education program started sensitizing and distributing free Eko Gas stove cylinders to Lagosians which has been taken to twenty six LG/LCDA’s.

In her goodwill message, the wife of the Governor and Special Guest of Honour at the event, Mrs. Emmanuell Fashola thanked the Lagos Chamber of Commerce and Industry (LCCI) LPG Group for partnering with the State Government and lauded the Eko Gas initiative because of its numerous advantages, while calling on Lagosians to imbibe the use of gas in homes for cleaner healthier environment.

Representative of the President of the Lagos Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Mrs Nike Akande in a good will message enjoined Lagosians to embrace the use of a cleaner fuel for cooking, while reiterating the determination of her organisation to continually partner with Lagos State Government in safeguarding the environment against hazardous substances emitted while cooking with charcoal, firewood and kerosene.

She presented awards by the Lagos Chamber of Commerce and Industry to deserving personalities for their contribution and support of the promotion of the use of LPG in the State. Those awarded includes the Governor of the State, Raji Fashola, (SAN) The Commissioner for Energy and Mineral Resources, Engr. Tijani, The permanent Secretary in the Ministry, Mrs Regina Obasa, Executive Chairman of Community Development advisory Committee, Mr Israel Olufemi Origa and the Secretary of the Committee, Joseph Sola. The Vice President of the Lagos Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Mrs Joane Maduka also received award from the Chamber.

The event also witnessed goodwill messages from the Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftancy Affair, Mr Kuye Ademorin, the Chairman, Lagos House Committee of Energy and Mineral Resources, Hon. Lanre Ogunyemi and the State Head of Service, Mrs Folashade Jaji.

Highlight of the event was the presentation of gas cylinders to the Chairman of the Executive secretary of Bariga Local Government, Hon. Kolade Alabi David who received the product on behalf of other LG/LCDA.

Notable people present at the sensitization programme were politicians, clerics, market women leaders, youth leaders, council workers and Community leaders in the State.
