Commissioner for Transportation, Oluwaseun Osiyemi, confirmed the development in a statement on Friday, advising motorists to expect lane restrictions and diversions throughout the period.

The phased repairs, scheduled to run until May 28, will cover both the Toll and Service Lanes in both directions, targeting expansion joints and other critical bridge elements.
Authorities assured that the bridge will not be fully closed at any point, with traffic managed through diversions across the Toll Lane, BRT Corridor and Service Lane. A preliminary phase from January 24–30 will prepare work zones, followed by repairs on Badagry-bound lanes from January 31 to March 30, and Lagos-bound lanes from March 31 to June 2.

During the works, vehicles will alternate between the Toll Lane and BRT Corridor depending on which section is under repair, while Service Lane works will temporarily reduce traffic to a single lane. Drivers are urged to obey traffic signs and instructions from the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) to ensure safety and smooth flow.

The maintenance comes ahead of plans to demolish and rebuild the Mazamaza Bridge as part of Phase 2 of the Lagos Blue Line Rail project, a 14-kilometre extension from Mile 2 to Okokomaiko. Structural tests had revealed the bridge could not support railway operations, prompting the decision to construct a new structure with 66 piers.

According to LAMATA’s Director of Rail Transport, Olasunkanmi Okusaga, the new bridge is designed to international standards and expected to last at least 75 years, ensuring durability and safety for future rail operations.
