Lagos Assembly Urges Osinbajo, NASS to re-open Ondo Assembly

The Lagos State House of Assembly on Tuesday called on the Acting President, Prof. Yemi Osinbajo and the leadership of the National Assembly to urgently reopen the Ondo State House of Assembly.

The lawmakers also urged outgoing Governor of Ondo State, Olusegun Mimiko to ensure smooth legislative activities, saying the existence of a Governor in office lies with having a parliament in place.

The House resolution was sequel to a motion moved by Hon. Bisi Yusuff representing Alimosho constituency 01 during Matters of Urgent Public Importance.
 
“Ondo Assembly has been under lock and key- this is not right; it is condemnable. It is never known in this country where the office of executive or judiciary is locked.

“It is not acceptable; there should be a lasting solution to what is happening to a very important arm of government,” Yusuff said.

Supporting the motion, the Speaker, Mudashiru Obasa who presided over the plenary explained that “whatever happens to either the eye or nose, the other suffers.

We are one! It has become common practice in the country where the parliament is made to suffer.
“If the police insist on shutting down the House, let them also shut down the executive so that we know there is no civil rule in Ondo State,” Obasa stated.

The Chief Whip, Hon. Rotimi Abiru who expressed worried that this is happening when the State should be transiting. appealed to the Nigeria police to reconsider their action saying the act is a bad signal to democracy.

Hon. Segun Olulade said the development in Ondo State House of Assembly could be seen as planning a coup against the people of the state.

The chairman, Education committee in the House, Hon. Olanrewaju Ogunyemi in his submission said the nauseating aspect of the issue was that it was ordered by the Inspector General of police, adding the IG should know his call institutional responsibility.

Hon. Jude Idimogu PDP member however, urged his colleagues not to allow the executive arm to disrupt activities of Houses of Assembly urged them to learn from the case of Ondo Assembly.

The Deputy Majority Leader, Hon. Muyiwa Jimoh said rather than calling for the reopening of the State Assembly, the House should write ‘an independent opinion’ condemning the act.

He however, argued that the Lagos Assembly has no locust standing to reverse the decision of the federal government.
