Kwankwaso open to joining APC ahead of 2027, says Jibrin

Abdulmumin Jibrin, member of the house of representatives from Kano state, says Rabiu Kwankwaso, his principal, is open to joining the All Progressives Congress (APC) ahead of the 2027 general election.
Jibrin made this known on Wednesday during an interview on Channels Television’s Politics Today when asked about Kwankwaso’s political direction.
The lawmaker, who represents Kiru/Bebeji federal constituency under the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP), said some APC stakeholders are resisting Kwankwaso’s possible defection because they feel threatened by his political influence.
“If you say Kwankwaso is moving into APC, or we are moving to APC, even within the APC in Kano, you have a lot of people that wouldn’t want him to come. Perhaps, those who want to be governor, or those who don’t want to be governor,” Jibrin said.
He added that Kwankwaso is more concerned about promoting political stability and pushing for a government of national unity than playing political games.
“I’ve tried to ensure that, in the interest of Kano and Nigeria, there is some sort of stability in our polity — it is quite a complex process.
“But everyone knows that I’ve always advocated, even right from the beginning of the government, for us to work with a government of national unity,” he added.
Jibrin further said Kwankwaso’s options remain open if joining APC would help unite the country.
“As far as that [joining APC] is concerned, he has always maintained that his doors are open, and our doors are open for discussions. Everything is a possibility,” he said.
However, Kwankwaso had earlier urged NNPP members not to be distracted by talks of defections or coalitions, stressing that any decision would be taken collectively by the party.
