For Imo state born singer, Tochukwu Ezeji better known as TBoy by his teaming fans who disclosed that music was more of a passion and driving force for him even after securing a degree as an Economist from the university; Music was the only way he could relate well. Signed on the Billionaire Minds Enterprise, TBoy recently became popular after he began the #IgboMovement through his new single ‘Kilofe’ where he promotes peace and unity in Nigeria through his kind of sound. In this chat with MUTIAT ALLI, TBoy explains that the #IgboMovement is far beyond just the Igbo Music & Culture, musical acts that influences his kind of music amongst others.
What does the brand TBoy represent?
Well, TBOY is a big independent brand that represents a young entrepreneur artiste, first and foremost. When people hear about TBOY they should know it’s a brand that represents and speaks for them especially for the youths.
When and how did music start for you?
Music started for me as a kid, growing up with musical parents. I started singing in churches, performing at church events with my kid sister & inspiring to be like the destined kids of our generation lol. It’s actually been something I love doing and at ease. So I can proudly say I started as a chorister and since childhood.
How did your parents take it when you shared your aspirations with them?
I think they already knew. It wasn’t something they could stop. At least they tried. But you know what they say about talent and destiny. Can be delayed but can’t be denied. I just had to obey and listen to them. I graduated as an Economist. So right now I’m basically doing something I want and love doing.
What’s your most challenging experience in the Nigerian music Industry so far?
I wouldn’t say its acceptance because I know my sound is lovely and catchy. So it’s just capital. Being independent got some challenges but with God nothing is impossible!
Where do you see yourself in the next 5years?
At the top! Like I always say it’s a worldwide movement and take over. Watch out!
How will you describe your sound?
I’m a versatile artiste. But for the record we can describe my sound as Afro Pop and a fusion of highlife.
Which international and local artist will you say influence your sound?
There are a whole bunch honestly. Locally, I listen to the likes of Flavor, Wizkid, Davido, Phyno, and Runtown. Then internationally I listen to a lot of Trap music and hip hop. So the likes of Casper Nyovest, Nasty C, Drake, Meek Mill, Future, Tory lanez, and some Migos for the culture.
Which record label are you signed to?
Billionaire Minds Enterprise.
What message does the #IgboMovement hash tag accredited to you represents? Yeah… #IgboBoyTakeOver like I previously posted on my IG dedicating my single KILOFE to King Fela Anikulapo Kuti. IGBOBOYTAKEOVER is a movement to promote Peace and Unity in Nigeria through music. I am a proud Nigerian and my music is targeted to speak to everyone around the world no matter the CULTURE, TRIBE & CONTINENT.
So the movement is much more beyond “just” The Igbo music/culture. This also depicts versatility in all aspects any urban lingo through music of course.
