Kim Jong Un: We are suffering from food insecurity

North Korean leader Kim Jong-un has admitted that his country is experiencing food shortages.

He blamed the problem on the inclement weather. However, the pandemic’s effects, as well as the halt of imports of products and humanitarian aid, have severely harmed the population’s supply.

For the first time, North Korean leader Kim Jong-un spoke out on Wednesday to voice his concern over the precarious food situation in his country.

During a plenary meeting of the ruling Workers’ Party’s Central Committee, the supreme leader acknowledged a “series of difficulties,” the outcome of various “challenges” to be addressed, while pointing out that industrial production was up 2%.

In this scenario, natural disasters, typhoons, and floods were blamed for the destruction of thousands of homes and farmland throughout the summer of 2020.

Kim Jong-un invoked a series of measures intended to curb the consequences of the harsh climatic conditions, frequent in this region and which make agricultural production uncertain.

The dictatorship has also been under the yoke of international sanctions since 2016-2017, following ballistic and nuclear tests, which mainly target oil and North Korean nationals working abroad, further weakening the regime.
