Chelsea won the Super Cup by defeating Villarreal 6-5 on penalties. Kepa Arrizabalaga was the hero for the Blues in the shootout after denying Raul Albiol in sudden death.
Chelsea won the competition for a second time after previously lifting the crown in 1998. A shootout was required after Gerard Moreno cancelled out Hakim Ziyech’s first-half strike.
Neither team found the net again during normal or extra-time.
However, Thomas Tuchel’s men held their nerve when it mattered the most to secure the win.
Chelsea begin their Premier League campaign against Crystal Palace on Saturday at Stamford Bridge. Villarreal have time to recover from their defeat before their LaLiga opener against Granada at home on Monday.
