Kebbi Pledges Stronger Security Following Border Attacks.
Following recent deadly attacks in parts of Arewa Local Government Area, the Kebbi State Government has reaffirmed its commitment to the safety of vulnerable border communities.
Alhaji Abubakar Umar Tafida, the Deputy Governor, delivered the assurance on behalf of Governor Nasir Idris during condolence visits to families affected by the attacks in Mamuni, Awashaka, Kurin-Naida, Tungar Tsoho, Danmairago, and Makargara, all of which are located near the Nigeria-Niger Republic border.
Addressing the grieving families, Tafida stated that the state government was implementing a stronger security strategy in collaboration with the federal government and security agencies to prevent further incursions by armed bandits.
“The Governor takes the issue of renewed strategy and commitment extremely seriously. We are working to strengthen collaboration and increase vigilance among all stakeholders in the security sector,” he said.
He added that both state and federal governments were investing in security infrastructure and stepping up efforts to “take the fight to the bandits in their hideouts wherever they are holed up.”
Kebbi, like several other northwestern states, has recently dealt with cross-border banditry, cattle rustling, and sporadic attacks on rural settlements, particularly in communities near the Niger Republic border.
Security analysts attribute the attacks to the porous nature of the border and the mobility of armed groups operating through forest corridors.
During the visit, the Deputy Governor urged residents to cooperate with security agencies by providing credible information about suspicious movements.
“We encourage you to continue providing useful information to security agencies. Together, we can defeat this menace,” he said, praying for the souls of those who died and urging families to accept the tragedy as Allah’s will.
He also announced financial assistance for the families of the deceased and victims who are currently receiving treatment in hospitals.
Villagers praised the soldiers for their quick and courageous response, which prevented additional casualties.
Malam Dogo Dauda Mamuni, speaking on behalf of the residents of Mamuni, where the majority of deaths occurred, said the troops arrived at a critical time.
“When the soldiers arrived, the bandits were about to enter the houses. “When the soldiers engaged them in a gunfight, they fled into the bush,” he said.
“Their prompt response saved numerous lives. We admire their courage and professionalism.
Members of the Deputy Governor’s entourage included the Commissioner for Home Affairs and Internal Security, Alhaji Haliru Wasagu; Commissioner for Information and Culture, Alhaji Yakubu Ahmed BK; Commissioner for Innovation and Digital Economy, Alhaji Ibrahim Mohammed Sakaba; member of the State House of Assembly, Alhaji Nura Kangiwa; and Chairman of Arewa Local Government, Alhaji Sani Kulita.
