The governorship candidate of Labour Party in Ogun State, Sina Kawonise, on Thursday broke down in tears after a Court declared him the authentic candidate to represent the party at Saturday’s governorship polls.
Mr. Kawonise, a former Commissioner for Information and Strategy, was allegedly victimised by the leadership of the party, comprising, Simeon Olabode (Chairman), Sunday Oginni (Secretary) and Arabambi.
The party leadership withdrew his ticket after the governorship primary, and handed it to Bolaji Sunmola, who did not contest.
Mr. Kawonise, was thereafter chased out of a governorship candidate debate organised by the Christian Association of Nigeria, Ogun State Chapter.
He was ejected by the three officials of the LP who had stormed the Ewang Estate, Abeokuta, venue of the event.
Mr. Kawonise instituted a suit before a Federal High Court, but the case was later transferred to the State High Court.
In her judgement, Justice O.O Majekodunmi restrained the Labour Party and the Independent National Electoral Commission from substituting Mr. Kawonise’s name with that of Mr. Sunmola, or any other person as the party’s governorship candidate in the state.
The judge ruled that the party contravened its constitution for party primaries and the Electoral Act 2010 by replacing Mr. Kawonise with Mr. Sunmola, who never participated in the primaries.
