Kano police arrest 288 thugs with weapons during by-election
The Kano State Police Command has arrested no fewer than 288 suspected thugs armed with dangerous weapons during Saturday’s by-election in four local government areas.
Abdullahi Haruna, the Command’s Public Relations Officer, confirmed the arrests in a telephone interview with Punch.
“As at 1pm today (Saturday), 288 thugs were apprehended with dangerous weapons in the local government areas where the by-election is going,” Haruna said.
He explained that the suspects were arrested for allegedly attempting to disrupt the electoral process and were apprehended alongside their sponsors.
“Items recovered from the suspects included one pump-action gun, four locally made guns, a number of cutlasses, sticks, bow and arrow, knives, catapult, among other dangerous weapons,” he said.
Haruna said the suspects are currently in police custody while investigations are ongoing to identify their sponsors and collaborators.
“The Command assures the public that all individuals found culpable will be prosecuted under the law,” he said.
”All forms of electoral manipulation, violence, and malpractice will not be tolerated.
He further urged members of the public to be law-abiding and to cooperate fully with security agencies.
