Kano By-Election: Poor Voter Turnout Plagues Municipal LGA Despite Early INEC Preparations

The Kano State House of Assembly bye-elections held on Saturday were met with a surprisingly low voter turnout across several polling units in the Kano Municipal Local Government Area, despite early preparations by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

Reports from the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) revealed that by mid-morning, numerous polling centers saw only a trickle of voters.

At various units, INEC officials were fully set up, with electoral materials neatly arranged, waiting patiently for constituents to arrive and cast their ballots.

Despite the apathy among voters, there was a robust security presence across the area. Heavily armed security personnel were strategically deployed around polling centers to maintain order, guarantee a peaceful process, and protect both voters and electoral staff.

Voters who did participate praised the organization and security arrangements while lamenting the poor turnout.

Alhaji Abdullahi Isa, one of the few constituents present, expressed his surprise at the low attendance but commended the security agencies for their professionalism.

Another voter, Audu Musa, who cast his ballot at the Kankarofi polling unit, described the voting process as smooth and peaceful, though he too expressed concern over the lack of participation.

Despite the slow start, electoral officials maintained a sense of optimism, hoping that voter turnout would pick up later in the day to ensure a transparent, credible, and conclusive electoral exercise.
