Kaduna police warn against Peter Obi birthday rally, citing security threat

The Kaduna police command has warned supporters of Peter Obi, the former Labour Party presidential candidate, against proceeding with a birthday rally in his honour.
The caution follows intelligence reports suggesting that criminal elements are planning to hijack the event to cause chaos and disrupt public peace.
Mansir Hassan, spokesperson of the command, issued the warning in a statement on Friday.
He said that while citizens have a right to political association and expression, all political rallies remain suspended in the state.
“The Command respects the right of individuals to associate and celebrate their political leaders,” the statement reads.
“However, it is important to emphasise that all forms of political rallies and public gatherings of a political nature remain suspended across the state until the official commencement date of political activities, as stipulated by INEC.”
Hassan noted that the proposed event could interfere with other political party primaries scheduled in the state and risk sparking clashes.
He urged the organisers to cancel the planned event for the sake of public safety.
“In view of these developments, the Command strongly advises the organisers of the planned Peter Obi rally to suspend any gathering or procession,” he added.
“If they wish to hold any form of event in honour of their principal, it is advised that such activities be suspended to ensure public safety and prevent potential hijack by miscreants.”
The police did not mention if arrests would be made if the rally goes ahead, but the warning underscores heightened tensions over political activities in the state.
