Police release Sowore after two days in detention

Omoyele Sowore, human rights activist and former presidential candidate, has been released by the Nigerian police after being held for two days.

Sowore confirmed his release on Friday evening, thanking supporters who stood by him during the period.

Daily Times had earlier reported that Sowore’s hand was broken by the police before he was moved to an undisclosed location after his arrest in Abuja.

In a statement on social media, Sowore said the release was not a cause for celebration but a reminder of the power of collective resistance.

“The Nigerian Police Force has finally capitulated to the demands of our revolutionary movement,” he said.

“After subjecting me to an unjust, unwarranted, and entirely unlawful detention, they had no choice but to release me tonight.

“However, this is not a victory to be celebrated with fanfare. It is not a moment for self-congratulation or eased tongues.

“It is simply a reminder of what we already knew — that when we stand together, when we refuse to bow, even the most oppressive institutions are forced to bend or break!.

Sowore expressed gratitude to his legal team, advocates for justice, and supporters both in Nigeria and the diaspora.

“I am deeply grateful to every one of you who refused to look away, particularly our strong and ever-firm legal team, the advocates for justice, and the resisters who marched on the streets through this ordeal,” he said,

“You all stood firm, raised your voices, and showed up in person, online, and at home in the diaspora. It is your unwavering solidarity that made this outcome inevitable.”

Known for his criticism of government policies and his #RevolutionNow movement calling for sweeping political and economic reforms, Sowore has faced multiple arrests in the past.

His latest detention drew condemnation from rights groups and civic activists, who described it as an attack on free speech and civic freedoms.

Sowore said the release marks a continuation of the struggle.

“The moment is not an end. It is fuel. It is proof that unity works and that resistance is not futile. The struggle continues, fiercer and more focused than ever, UNTIL WE WIN!” he said.
