Jibrin, Kazaure face suspension over comment on NASS resolutions

The House of Representatives on Wednesday, accused two members of abuse of House rules and privilege for allegedly disclosing that Tuesday’s joint session of the National Assembly was convened to impeach President Muhammadu Buhari and that it was instigated by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) lawmakers.
If found guilty by the House Ethics and Privileges Committee chaired by Hon Nicholas Ossai, Ossai the two House members, Hon Abdulmumin Jibrin (APC, Kano) and Hon Gudaji Kazaure (APC Jigawa) may likely be sanctioned through suspension.

Hon Jibrin is accused of issuing a statement distancing APC lawmakers from being party to the resolutions reached at the joint session and alleging that only the PDP lawmakers backed the resolutions.
In his case, Hon  Kazuare is facing the ethics committee for alleging that Hon Kingsley Chinda (PDP, Rivers) and Hon Ossai (PDP, Delta) were the chief masterminds behind moves to impeach Buhari.
Moving for the abuse of privilege to be investigated under matters of breach of personal privilege by Hon Sunday Karimi from Kogi State, who said that his personal privilege has been breached by comments made by Jibrin regarding the outcome of the joint session.

Supporting the motion, Ossai also raised a similar motion alluding to a breach of privilege by presenting a copy of a newspaper where Kazaure briefed the press alleging that Chinda and himself is spearheading the collection of signatures from members to impeach the president.

Ruling on both motions, the Speaker of the House. Hon Yakubu Dogara urged members of the House who do not attend plenaries always to do so to avoid quoting the proceedings of the chamber out of context.
Dogara thereafter referred the two matters to the House Committee on Ethics and Privileges for investigation.

Our correspondent reports that Jibrin has been in the eye of the storm in the House after he was suspended for 180 legislative days and has just returned from the suspension.
Also, the Federal High Court had ruled that the suspension of the lawmaker from Kano was illegal and had ordered the House leadership to pay him his withheld entitlements.
