ISWAP claims to have killed Brigadier General following Borno ambush

Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) fighters claimed they killed Brigadier General M. Uba following the ambush of a convoy of soldiers and Civilian Joint Task Force (CJTF) operatives in Borno state.

The attack occurred on Friday along Damboa Road near Wajiroko, where troops were transporting military equipment. ISWAP fighters reportedly opened fire on the convoy, triggering a gun battle between the insurgents and the soldiers.

During the clash, ISWAP fighters seized at least 17 military motorcycles, while two CJTF operatives and two soldiers were killed, according to initial reports.

There were also reports that Brigadier General Uba had been abducted by the insurgents. However, the Nigerian Army disputed these claims. Army spokesperson Onyechi Anele said on Saturday that Uba had battled the ambush with superior firepower, forcing the insurgents to withdraw in disarray.

She added that Uba led his troops back to the military base, confirming that casualties included two CJTF operatives and two soldiers.

Uba reportedly released a video statement, asserting that he was alive, unharmed, and fully in command.

Contrastingly, Reuters cited ISWAP’s Amaq propaganda channel, reporting that the group claimed responsibility for the ambush and executed the general after capturing him.
