INEC displays 1.9m provisional voters register for verification in Sokoto

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has displayed provisional register of 1,910,281 voters at 3,035 polling units across Sokoto State for verification to ensure that credible voters register for 2019 general elections.

The Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC), Alhaji Abubakar Sadiq, told newsmen on Wednesday in Sokoto that the register was displayed for community members to detect deceased names.

He said the exercise was also to check, multiple registrations, under aged registration, aliens’ registration and registration with still pictures.

Sadiq said forms were made available for complaints, noting that the exercise was aimed at providing credible and authentic register free from errors.

He said the exercise covered all the 244 political wards in 23 local government areas in the state from Nov. 6 to Nov. 12 at 9 a.m to 3 p.m, daily.

He said relevant stakeholders were consulted and partnered with to ensure smooth and successful conduct of the exercise.

According to him, total Permanent Voters Card (PVCs) received from INEC headquarters were 1, 769, 655 while 1, 639, 087 were distributed in the state.

Sadiq said distribution of 130,568 is still ongoing, including those that registered in 2011.

He further urged voters to come forward and verify the register, adding that those who registered should collect their PVCs.

According to REC that the exercise complies with electoral regulations enshrined by the Constitution which is part of INEC mandates.

The commissioner explained that after application of routine checks by INEC on displayed provisional register, the authentic voter register would be provided by INEC headquarters to be used at elections.
