Independence Day: Nigerians advised to focus on national issues

Nigerians have been advised to use the Independent Day Celebration to reflect on issues in the light of national cohesion and prosperity.

The advise was given during a Holly Mass to mark the 57 Independence Anniversary of Nigeria, at St. Patrick’s Cathedral Awka, Anambra state.

The Catholic Bishop of Awka, Most Rev Paulinus Ezeokafor who made the admonition said the country had been undergoing various challenges since 1960, calling to provide necessary solutions to solve the problems.

According to him “Our country is passing through a phase that is marked by tension, agitation and a general sense of hopelessness and dissatisfaction. This we believe is as a result of years of injustice, inequality, corruption and impunity, one sidedness in appointments to key institutions and sensitive national offices, marginalization and unfair distribution of resources and amenities. ”

“Apart from the restiveness in the Niger Delta, the Boko Haram terrorism and the frequent bloody clashes between the IPOB members and the Nigerian military is a serious matter requiring deep thoughtful consideration from all well meaning Nigerians.” Ezeokafor noted

He called to allow the light of the gospel to shine in these dark spots of the national life to make things better for the populace.

Earlier speaking, the State governor Chief Willie Obiano said his administration has invested N 200 million on health insurance scheme to improve the welfare of health workers and ensure prompt medical delivery.

This was coming as the state governor, Chief Willie Obiano announced the passing of Health Insurance Bill by the State House of Assembly.

The Governor said the health Insurance scheme would go a long way to ameliorate the sufferings of the people, especially those at remote areas.

He stressed the under his watch, the State government would continued to provide every necessary arrangements to improve health services for the people of the State.

According the Governor ” I have constituted a board to regulate the scheme. The board will commence work immediately. From November, avail yourself the opportunity to benefit from the scheme in all the local governments. It is at the reasonable cost and in most cases free.”

“We have built and refurbished 63 doctors’ quarters across the local governments to give prompt medical attention to the people. Obiano added.
