Increase in electricity tariff to attract investors -JED

The Jos Electricity Distribution Company (JED), PLC has said the reason for the much speculated increase in tariff is to attract investors.

JED said if the tariff is low, no investor will want to put down money in a venture that will not yield profit, adding that attracting investors will also help to improve electricity supply.

It would be recalled that the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission has approved increase in electricity tariff by the 11 Electricity Distribution Companies (DisCos) in the country.
The directive of the new tariff regime for different DisCos and category of customers, was published on NERC website recently.
The directive as published was signed by the NERC Chairman, Prof. James Momoh, and Secretary, Mr. Dafe Akpedeye.
However speaking to newsmen on Wednesday in Jos, during a Stakeholders Consultation on Extraordinary Tariff Review, the Head Corporate Planning and Strategy JED Plc, Mr. Olushola Ajala, said, “if the tariff is a bit higher than what it is investors would be willing to come around”, he said.
However, he added that customers views must be put into consideration before harping on the new tariff regime, hence the reason for the stakeholders forum.
Our correspondent reports that JED PLC controls four franchise States of Bauchi, Gombe, Benue and Plateau.
