Impeachment: ‎Ondo Assembly Directs CJ to Set Panel for Dep Gov

The Ondo State House of Assembly, on Wednesday, directed the state Chief Judge, Olaseinde Kumuyi, to set up a seven-man panel to look into the allegations of gross misconduct against the Deputy Governor, Alhaji Ali Olanusi.
‎Its speaker, Hon. Jumoke Akindele, gave the directive after twenty-two lawmakers had given their consent.
Akindele, who directed the clerk to forward the House’s resolution to Kumuyi, assured of their readiness to follow due process in all its responsibility on the matter.
The directive of the Assembly came barely a day after Olanusi was served a notice of impeachment for alleged gross misconduct.

The allegations ranged from abuse of office for personal enrichment, diversion of public funds etc.

The House majority leader, Ifedayo Akinsoyinu, who moved the motion said the lawmakers’ action was in consonance with Section 188 Sub-section 3 of the 1999 Constitution, and was also supported by Fatai Olotu representing Akoko North East Constituency.

Meanwhile, the state government has clarified that it would not dabble into the impeachment process of Olanusi.

The State Commissioner for Information, Kayode Akinmade, who made the clarification, said the impeachment process was a constitutional matter.

Akinmade, while reacting to claims that Olanusi sought the permission of the governor, Olusegun Mimiko, to travel out of the country said: “As far as government is concerned, the Deputy Governor should be in Ode Irele, on Wednesday, to represent Mr. Governor at a function,” he said.
