Imo jail escapee arrested in Lagos for stealing SIM card
Onyemachi Maduabuchi, 34, was apprehended by the Lagos State Police Command after he escaped from the Owerri Correctional Centre in Imo State on April 5, 2021.
The suspect is said to have departed Owerri the same day to his town, Fegge in Onitsha, Anambra State, to see his mother, who eventually connected him with his elder sister, Amarachi Maduabuchi, of Customs Bus Stop in Ijegun, Lagos.
Following that, his sister invited him to Lagos on April 19, 2021. The suspect was kept in the sister’s residence, where she used to take him to church for special deliverance services, according to Lagos State Police spokesman Olumuyiwa Adejobi.
The suspect allegedly took the SIM and memory cards of a church member (name withheld) after the vigil on April 20, 2021, at Bride Assembly Church, Ijesha, Lagos, before being apprehended and the stolen materials recovered from him.
During the course of the police investigation, it was discovered that the suspect had been on trial before Justice Nna Amadi of Ngbidi High Court 1 in Ngbidi, Imo State, since 2009 for conspiracy, armed robbery, and arson.
The suspect admitted to the act, and Lagos State Commissioner of Police, Hakeem Odumosu, ordered that the suspect be handed over to the Nigerian Correctional Service for additional investigation and, if necessary, detention.
