Imo Guber Re-Run: PDP Calls for Cancellation of Process
Barely 72 hours to the supplementary elections on the inconclusive April 11 Governorship and House of Assembly polls, in Imo State, the state leadership of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), on Wednesday, called for outright cancellation of the entire exercise over alleged electoral frauds.
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in the state had declared the election inconclusive and fixed April 25 for re-run of the polls, as a result of electoral violence and electoral malpractices.
Briefing newsmen at the PDP state headquarters, in Owerri, the Chairman of the party, Chief Nnamdi Anyaehie, alleged that there was massive frauds orchestrated by INEC officials, during March 28 Presidential and April 11 Gubernatorial elections.
He alleged that the ward electoral officers, local government Returning Officers and some INEC officials were invited to Government House on the eve of April 11 poll by the All Progressive congress (APC)-led government and offered them between N1million and N5milion.
He said that, despite the alarm raised by the PDP, the commission went ahead to deploy them to various wards and local government areas to conduct elections.
According to him, there was selective deployment of card reader machines to PDP stronghold, while manual accreditation of voters were carried out in APC dominated areas.
He further alleged that the results of its members that won Imo West Senatorial zone (Orlu zone), Okigwe North Federal Constituency and Ohaji/Egbema, Oguta and Oru West Federal Constituencies had been tampered with by INEC officials, stressing that the state Resident Electoral Commissioner, Dr. Gabriel Adah, assured the party that the matter was being handled internally by the commission.
According to him, the electoral commission deployed no customised results sheets used to write jumbo results in favour of APC, citing, Ideato North, Ideato South, Onuimo, Mbaitoli, Ikeduru, Orlu and Okigwe local government areas.
He, therefore, expressed shock that despite the alleged electoral frauds and violence that marred Oru East, Owerri West and Mbaitoli House of Assembly election, the commission failed to call for re-run in the affected areas.
