Imo electoral commissioner canvasses use of electronic voting
Val Okara, Owerri
The Imo state Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) of the Independent National Electoral Commission, Prof. Francis Ezeonu has canvassed for electronic voting system for future elections in the country.
Prof. Ezeonu made the suggestion during a breakfast meeting with selected journalists at the INEC state headquarters, Owerri on Thursday, said if the electronic voting system is adopted it would reduce election malpractices such as thuggery, rigging as well as the desperation of over-zealous politicians.
According to him, the electronic voting system would bring sanity into the nation’s democracy and discourage ballot bot snatching and re-writing of election results.
He stated that the nation’s democracy would not thrive in the country if there is no mutual trust among the electorate, stakeholders and players in the political arena and therefore, expressing worry that the desperation of politicians in elections was a major threat to the growth and survival of democracy in the country.
The electoral officer advised that politicians should consider their job as a call to duty to serve mankind. Prof. Ezeonu further observed that political offices in the country are too juicy, adding that there is the need to put a cap on benefits attached to political offices.
