Hospitals in Ilorin, the Kwara state capital, have recorded low patronage following the lockdown aimed at containing the spread of the coronavirus pandemic.
A visit to major health facilities on They, showed that very few patients were in the facilities.
Some medics, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said that they treat only selected cases.
At Delouse Medical Centre, Offa Garage, the hospital was virtually empty as it was only the doctor, one nurse and a cleaner were on duty.
The doctor on duty, Dr. Elizabeth Johnson, confirmed that they were not attending to any fresh case in the hospital.
“Normally, our area of focus here is mainly on maternal health and deliveries, but that is not to say that we do not treat other cases.
“But, for now, we have stopped treating them; we are only open to our ante-natal patients and those that are due for delivery. We are trying to be careful as much as possible,’’ she said.
At Yusjib Hospital there were quite a number of health workers around, though with few patients.
The Matron on duty, Mrs. Asmau Busari, said that the hospital did not take in patients as it used to be.
Busari said that the doctor first conducts vital checks, while fully kitted, on patients outside, before they were allowed into the hospital.

“Once anything is suspicious about such person, he or she is referred immediately. The only patients we take now are pregnant women who are due for delivery,’’ she said.
The matron said that there had been low patronage since the period of partial lockdown in the state.
At God’s Grace Clinic and Maternity, Olunlade, only a nurse trainee was in sight with no doctor or nurse on duty to attend to patients.
The nurse trainee, who simply identified herself as Islamiyah, said that there had been little or no patronage at all since the coronavirus pandemic started.
She said that other members of staff could not come to work due to the total lockdown.
