IGP warns newly inaugurated Police constables against misconduct, human rights violation

The Newly inaugurated Police Constables have been warned against involving in professional misconduct and Human Rights Abuses.

The Inspector General of Police (IGP), Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun gave the warning while speaking at the passing out Parade ceremony of 10,000 police constables of 2022 batch in Bauchi on Thursday.

“Abhor all forms of lawlessness, human rights abuse, and unprofessional conduct. Instead, utilize your authority to protect citizens, enforce laws, and apprehend
criminals”, he said.

IGP Egbetokun who noted that the passing out parade is been held concurrently across four police colleges and twelve police training schools of Nigeria explained that the constables have been impacted with the necessary orientation to effectively address the complex security challenges facing the country while adhering to the principles of the law.

Represented by the Police Commissioner, Bauchi state Command, Auwal Muhammad Musa, the IGP said that the passing out parade ceremony, marks the
culmination of six-months rigorous training program that has pushed the recruits to their physical and intellectual limits.

“Our comprehensive and research based curriculum has equipped them with fundamental policing ethics, norms, and practices, as well as modern law enforcement principles”, the IGP said.

He further stressed that high expectations has been placed on the graduating constables, with confidence that they will uphold the values imparted to them during their training,
thereby contributing to the enhancement of law enforcement in the country.

IGP Egbetokun praised President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for his administration’s commitment to strengthening the Nigeria Police Force by addressing the longstanding manpower deficit.

“The President’s approval for the annual recruitment of 30,000 Police Constables over the next few years is expected to strengthen our internal security, enhance police performance, and promote optimal police service delivery nationwide”, he said.

The IGP assured that the police under his watch is fully aligned with the President Tinubu’s vision towards driving the renewed hope initiative of transforming the
Nigeria Police Force into a reformed, well-positioned, and
capable institution that effectively fulfills its internal security mandate Pursuant to the Community Policing principle of the current police administration.

He said that the force has posted a significant majority of the newly graduated Police Constables to their states of origin to augment ongoing law enforcement efforts and reinforce the fight against crime at the grassroots level.

While expressing optimisms that the new officers will demonstrate exceptional professionalism, integrity and dedication to service, thereby upholding the honour and prestige of the Police Force.

The IGP reminded the new constables that their role demands empathy and compassion towards the civilian population, particularly the vulnerable, while maintaining firmness and fairness in all interactions.

While tasking the constables to strive to be perceived as a friend and partner to the public, the IGP reminded them that their uniform and the office they informed that they hold are symbols of trust and responsibility which should not be used to exploit, intimidate, harass or pervert justice.

He equally charged them to demonstrate boldness, responsibility, discipline, and loyalty to the Force, while remaining calm and composed in the face of adversity.
