IGP pushes for community Policing, vows to end hate speech, insurgency

The Inspector General of Police (IGP), Ibrahim Idris has said community Policing will help to achieve very low crime profile within communities.

He said if the scheme is achieved, it will be a perfect force to stem out hate speech, insurgency and other societal ill ravaging the country.

The IGP stated this at the weekend, during the occasion of the Graduating Ceremony of Advanced Detective Course, held at the Police Staff College in Jos, the Plateau State capital.

He said, “the Force management has relaunched the Community Policing Scheme with massive campaign on robust engagement of critical stakeholders and other non – state actors, to engender public support aimed at achieving very low crime profile in our communities.

“These endeavors have also resulted in the establishment of Eminent Persons Forum, strengthening the Police Public Relation committees in all the Commands and the Regular Convocation of security Summits in various locations”.

The Police boss said in spite of the efforts of the Police and other security agencies, serious crimes as Insurgency, Militancy, Kidnapping, Armed Robbery, Human Trafficking, Financial Crimes, Hate Speeches has continued to constitute a major challenge to National Security.

Earlier, the Commandant Police Staff College, AIG Dorothy Gimba, said the college however, has equipped the graduating Police Officers with the contemporary knowledge to combat crimes especially the current farmers/herders conflict and the proliferation of small and light weapons.

Gimba said the college authority also took cognisance of the fact that drugs, money laundering, and access to the internet, play major roles in aiding these crimes, adding that the successful prosecution of arrested suspects remains most potent weapon in tackling the menace.
