IGP Orders Tight Security around Media Houses Nationwide
The Acting Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Solomon E. Arase has ordered water tight security around media houses in the country.
A statement by Force spokesman, Emmanuel Ojukwu, an acting Commissioner of Police (CP) said IGP Arase was concerned about the recent attacks on the media houses and journalists.
He said the order “is in line with the mandate of the Nigeria Police Force to protect lives and property of the citizenry under the law. The IGP acknowledges the valuable roles of the media to the enthronement of democracy in Nigeria.”
The IGP further advised citizens to be more vigilant and proactive and to report any suspicious movement or persons to the police promptly for appropriate action.
Although reference was not made of any specific incident in the statement, four persons were killed and several others sustained serious injuries in a bomb attack on a community radio station, TAO FM in Okene, Kogi State, on Monday night.
The bomb exploded at the radio station, operating on 101.5 frequency, at about 8pm.
No group has claimed responsibility for the attack and the reason for the bombing of the radio station located at the centre of Okene town, which is the headquarters of Kogi Central Senatorial District, remained unknown.
Kogi State Police Public Relations Officer, Shola Collins confirmed the incident and said that police detectives were already investigating the incident.
Collins said the attack affected part of the radio station building, adding that four persons had already been confirmed dead, while many others injured are receiving treatment in various hospitals in the area.
