Igboho’s Arrest: Ooni constitutes committee, mobilise south-west leaders

The Ooni of Ife, Enita Ogunwusi, has formed a 28-member committee of south-west elites to investigate Sunday Igboho’s arrest in the Benin Republic.

The committee’s coordinator, Akin Osuntokun, stated that the group will investigate the problems surrounding Igboho’s detention and associated subjects.

After being detained at Cardinal Bernardin International Airport with his wife on their way to Germany on Monday night, Igboho is being held by Brigade Criminelle in Cotonou.

He was proclaimed sought by the Department of State Services earlier this month after DSS operatives stormed his Ibadan home on July 1, 2021.

The DSS killed two people in the late-night raid, while 12 others were apprehended and paraded in Abuja. They’ve been charged in court since then.

Igboho’s extradition hearing in Cotonou was canceled on Wednesday due to the Benin Republic government’s failure to appear in court for unknown reasons.

“The Ooni of Ife established an advisory council comprised of notable Yoruba sons and daughters across the political spectrum,” according to Osuntokun. It’s known as the Ooni Caucus.

“The inauguration event had been planned for over a month, and the fact that it coincided with news of Sunday Igboho’s arrest in Cotonou was just coincidental. Nonetheless, the council is keenly interested in the latest development and will respond appropriately as soon as possible.”

Oba Olusola Alao, the Olugbon of Igbon; Senator Biodun Olujimi; Toyin Saraki; Segun Awolowo’; Doyin Okupe; Gbenga Daniel; and Muyiwa Ige are among the members of the committee.
