ICT: Minister warns of pitfalls against sustainable development

Minister, Permanent Mission of Nigeria to the United Nations, Mr. Bolaji Akinremi, has warned government that if the information gap keeps widening, the possibility of attaining sustainable development by 2030 is not certain.

Akinremi said this while delivering Nigeria’s statement on ‘Information and Communications Technologies for Development’ at the recent UN General Assembly’s debate in New York.
He said that Nigeria is committed to increasing the current coverage of the active mobile broadband subscription per 100 from 20.95 per cent to 50 per cent by 2020.
According to him, leveraging Information and Communications technology is key to Nigeria’s quest towards attaining a sustainable development by 2030.

Akinremi, whose role is to facilitate Nigeria’s relations with member states on issues touching on cooperation in international law, international security, economic development, social progress and human rights, stressed that Nigeria will continue to call on Member States to consider giving ICTs a pride of place in the education curriculum.

“By so doing, they will undoubted bridge the digital divide,” He added.
