‘I was shot in the hand when I tried to escape’

It is three years today since the conflict in South Sudan began.

The UN has this week warned that ethnic cleansing is taking place and there is “the potential for genocide”.

The International Rescue Committee estimates that more than 2m people have been forced to flee their homes in that time.

They have been asking what happened next to some of those who fled.

Adut left in 2014:

When the fighting erupted, we fled and I was shot in the hand. It had to be amputated in hospital.”

I was with a group of women and children. We walked to the Kenyan border, sleeping at night. Kind people gave us food.”

She now lives in Kakuma refugee camp:

Life is hard in the camp – especially with one hand. But the future is for my children to be educated.”
