Hoodlums attack Aregbesola’s campaign team, injure APC members

Hoodlums suspected to be hired political thugs attacked the convoy of Governor Rauf Aregbesola in Ilase, Obokun Local Government Area of Osun State.

It occurred when Aregbesola had gone to Ibokun and Ilase to campaign for candidates on the platform of All Progressives Congress (APC) when the incident occurred.

During the attack, several APC members were injured, posters of contestants, APC flags and the podium on which the governor was to address the gathering were also damaged.

The hoodlums also fired several gun shots into the air to scare the waiting APC crowd before freely destroying flags, posters and campaign podium.

It was further gathered that female member of APC had her ear slashed off with matchet and she was rushed to an undisclosed hospital.

It was learnt that when Aregbesola returned to the campaign ground, he didn’t expect what he saw, describing it as callous and condemnable.

“We, as a party, are responsible and peace-loving. We are loved by the people. It is those who do not have electoral value that will attack the same people they ought to patronise for votes,” the governor said.

A statement issued by the media aide of Governor Aregbesola, Mr. Semiu Okanlawon, said that the ruling party in the state will remain undaunted.

“We will not the cowed by anybody in the state. In the last four years, our government has restored peace to the state. We call on security agencies to be proactive and deal with anyone whose sole agenda is to cause violence in the state,” he added.

Also, the party in a statement issued by its Director of Publicity, Research and Strategy, Kunle Oyatomi warned the PDP to avoid violence ahead of the election.

“The more violent the PDP gets anywhere in the country – especially in the state of Osun, the more unpopular it becomes, and the more of a nuisance the party makes itself. The PDP in Osun has acquired a notoriety for violence, believing that it enjoys impunity through the protective shield of ‘Federal Might'”, the APC said.

The spokesperson to PDP senatorial Candidate for Osun-East Senatorial District, Mr. Sola Olowoye debunked the allegation that the PDP was sponsoring the violence.

He said, “It is a lie that Fadahunsi sponsored attack against APC members. Fadahunsi is very popular in the town and this is because he has impacted the lives of the people positively. The APC was seeking to cause trouble in the town because they are aware that their party is not popular there.”
