Herdsmen menace: Governors are insincere, says Kalu
Former governor of Abia state, Dr. Orji Uzor Kalu has called on governors in the country to tackle the menace of herdsmen in the states by judiciously utilizing their security votes.
Speaking with aviation Correspondents at the Murtala Mohammed International Airport Ikeja on national issues on his way from the United Kingdom, Kalu said the governors were inexperience and weak in handling security issues in their respective states.
According to the former Abia state governor, “They are lying, they are not saying the truth. As a state governor, I summoned the Police Commissioner, Brigade Commander at any time, in the night at 3:00 am and they will come and I will discuss security issues with them. Some of the governors are not doing their jobs.
“Use the security vote you have to fight, as a state governor, I had all the powers of the commissioner of Police. Everything does not rest on Buhari”
Kalu urged complaining governors to borrow a leaf from Governor Ambode of Lagos State and do their job by channeling the security fund where it ought to be stressing, that as a governor, he provided insurance for the police in Abia state which enabled them to perform well.
On pockets of crises arising from the primaries of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Kalu said there was nothing strange as the party remained democratic noting that the worst happened in this country in 1999 and 2003.
According to him, democracy was to disagree and agree stressing that APC will not lose election in 2019 “What is happening today is smaller to what happened in 1999 and 2003. It’s a minor issue, in Abia, we did congresses 23 times. It’s politics and everybody cannot say yes.”
He commended President Buhari for the visit to President Trump adding that it has raised hope of Nigerians and confidence reposed on the country by the world powers.
“its difficult to see any president in the world that in a space of four weeks will visit two major countries in the world. It’s only showing the position and confidence the world powers are reposing on Buhari. It shows that the door is open”
On the present economic hardship being encountered by Nigerians, Kalu explained that the country will finally exit recession by January 2019 adding that it was a gradual process “recession cannot come and go over night, the borrowing and pumping in money by government is to ensure that recession is over. I know things are hard but the youths are working hard these days making more effort than before”
The former Abia state governor urged both the executive and legislature to work together in the interest of the country adding that the legislators have the right to do their job whether right or wrong but doubted if president Buhari would have done what will warrant impeachment.
