Herdsmen killings: Benue State CAN Chairman wants Buhari to visit

The Chairman, Benue State Christian Association of Nigeria, CAN, Mr. Akpen Leva on Saturday called on President Mohammadu Buhari to visit Benue State in order to access the damage caused by Fulani herdsmen.
Leva who decried that the president’s long silence over the killings in Benue is becoming a call for concern wondered why the president could visit Benue State for his presidential campaign but would deliberately refused to visit and console the people of the State in their moment of grief.
He spoke during a fact finding meeting embarked upon by the Leadership of the Nigerian Bar Association, NBA, in the State to proffer lasting solution to the crises.
Also the NBA president, Mahmoud Mohammed who led members of the bar on the Fact Finding Mission in the state said that the bar had been associated with the principle of rule of law, and it is committed to bringing the circle of violence to an end.
Addressing the stakeholders during a one day town hall meeting, the NBA boss assured that the NBA will carry out a detailed table review of the issues raised by the stakeholders and come up with a logical conclusion.
He said, ” The Bar has been consistently associated with the rule of law. We are concern that whatever our contribution is, it will be concise and practical.
“We are also concern in bringing this circle of violence to an end. The NBA will look at the evidence and content of facts, careful analysis of all the facts and come out with a logical conclusion”.
On their part, the stakeholders comprising religious leaders, traditional rulers and State government representatives spoke with one voice insisting that the State has no land for cattle colonies.

The State CAN Chairman Leva, who called for the immediate arrest and prosecution of leaders of Maiyiti Allah lamented that even after leaders of the group openly issued several threats, non of their members have been arrested by security agents.
” The people of the State were living in peace until last year when the anti grazing law was enacted, the herdsmen started killing our people and they are still threatening us.
” We are still living in fear because the whole of Benue State is under seige” Leva added.
For his part, Special Assistant to Governor Samuel Ortom on Local government affairs Mr. Titus Zam accused Nasarawa State government of accommodating the attackers of the state.
He also described as unfortunate that the Benue sons who are representing the state at the Federal level has not done enough to the people of the State since the fetuses started.
Zam lamented the poor response to the situation by the Federal government and added his voice to the call on president Buhari to visit the state and access the level of damages for himself.
