Harmattan: Fire Service calls for safety, warns against carelessness

The Northwest Zonal Commanding Officer, Federal Fire Service, Thompson Olatunji Muhammad has called on the General Public to adopt safety measures to safeguard lives and property as this year’s harmattan season sets in.
He made the call yesterday at the Kano Federal Secretariat during the flag off of 2018 awareness campaign, themed: Carelessness, major cause of Fire, which is expected to run throughout the week in different selected areas of the state.
According to him, the harmattan season which is characterized by dry wind, is usually associated with cases of Fire disasters which leads to the destruction of lives and property worth billions of Naira.
Thompson calls on homes, offices and business premises to adopt safety measures that would prevent or minimize loss as a result of Fire outbreaks by ensuring that valuables are kept safe from situations that could result to fire disaster.
“Attitude such as indiscriminate use and access to matches and lighters among minors, smoking while in bed, lack of fire extinguishers at home, offices, markets and other public places as well as storing highly flammable substances and liquids in poor conditions, are some of the carelessness that results to fire out break” he said
Thompson tasked stakeholders to join in the campaign against fire outbreak, which has devastating effects on the economy of individuals, states and the country at large.
Also speaking at the flag off ceremony, Officer in-charge of the Kano Command, Oyekola Kazeem said the campaign aims to sensitize the general public on the dangers of fire hazards, how to handle fire outbreaks as well as to educate the public on how to handle the various fire equipment.
