Gwarzo suspension long over due, says Labour Union

The Nigeria Labour Union under the auspices of Association of Senior Civil Servants of Nigeria (ASCSN) on Wednesday commended Presided President Muhammadu Buhari for what it described as “timely intervention” in the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) by suspending the embattled Director General Mr Munir Gwarzo saying that the suspension was long over due.
The union also said that it fully supported the suspension of Gwarzo, SEC DG on the allegations of corruption.
In a statement issued at the SEC Towers Abuja and signed by Comrade Isaac Oejmhenke on behalf of the Secretary General of ASCSN, said that the decision by the Federal Government to suspend the DG was important to enable the administrative panel of inquiry to investigate and determine the culpability of Mr Gwarzo and his cohorts.
According to the union, the sponsored report about Oando Plc Forensic audit as being responsible for Gwarzo suspension is a deliberate and diversionary tactic to divert the public attention away from the weighty allegations bothering on corruption.
It said maintained that the corruption allegations against Gwarzo should be treated on its merit without any intermingling with any alleged interference by the supervising ministry.
“The Capital Market as we are aware, is very sensitive and strives on integrity. As the DG of the apex regulator of the Nigeria Capital Market, who currently has several corruption allegations levied against him, if is extremely important that he clears his name from these allegations for the purpose of integrity in the Capital Market.
“For the past two years, Murni Gwarzo has fought the labour union in SEC and did everything possible to obliterate the union to enable him have free chance without any checks. This is evidenced in the corruption allegations,” the ASCSN stated.
The statement further read: “The jubilation in the Commission that greeted the announcement of Gwarzo’ suspension was more than the one in Zimbabwe when Mugabe was removed from power.
The union rejects in its entirety the attempt being made by in some quarters to restore Gwarzo back to office.
The issue of Gwarzo’ suspension from office is very clear as it bothers on serious breach of the rules governing parastatals of government. The attempt being made to change the narrative by bringing in the issue of forensic audit of Oando is neither here nor there. The right thing has been done by the government and we support the action taken.”
The union therefore, appealed to President Buhari to as matter of urgency constitute the board of the Securities and Exchange Commission.
