Group marks girl child day with launching of exclusive club

The Adekunle Child Foundation (TACF) and Sisters Wives and Mothers (SWiM) for the first time commemorated The International Day of the Girl Child.

One of the outcomes of the event, according to the founder, Femi Adekunle, “Was a decision to establish a Girls’ Club, to enable them work with the girls closely and further identify the issues they are facing with a view to helping them find lasting solutions.

“We commemorated the International Day of the Girl Child 2018, with the launch of the Beryl Girls’ Club in Junior Secondary School, Garki, a public school in the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja, Nigeria, on the 17th of October, 2018.

“This was made possible with the support of government (Universal Basic Education Board – UBEB) and the school authorities.

“This was done in collaboration with Sisters Wives and Mothers (SWiM), an NGO dedicated to the cause of women and girls”.

The Founder, ‘Femi Adekunle shared the vision and the mission. The Club’s Vision is to be a platform for guaranteeing the emotional well-being of the girl-child.

Its mission is to learn, heal and socialize. The Club shall afford them the opportunity to acquire knowledge, unburden their emotional challenges and catch fun, with a view to making them responsible ladies, mothers and citizens in the future. The girls, whose ages ranged from 12 to 16, were excited.

Their first opportunity at learning, leadership and civic responsibility came at the event when the girls elected their representatives, members of the Executive Committee who shall steer the affairs of the Club. They were:

According to him, here are plans to scale up this program in other schools, especially in the rural areas. The girl-child is immensely gifted.

The rural girl-child in particular is not inferior in any way to her urbane counterparts; she is only denied opportunities as a result of her demography.

It is expected that this program will deliver to them through the various activities they will be engaged in, ability for creativity, multi-disciplinary thinking, technology literacy, teamwork and empathy among others, being critical skills required by youth in the 21st century.
