Grant responsible citizens access to carry AK 47, other weapons — Ortom tells FG

Samuel Ortom

Due to the incessant threat of insecurity towards the development of the country, Benue State Governor Samuel Ortom has urged the federal government to grant responsible citizens the license to carry sophisticated weapons such as AK 47, in a bid to deter criminals from attacking innocent and helpless Nigerians.

However, Ortom noted that the policy, when considered, would be backed by a strict legal framework to prevent illegal possession of arms by the citizen and without exception.

Governor Ortom made this known on Tuesday during a virtual meeting convened by Centre for Values in Leadership, CVL, in collaboration with Nigeria Governors’ Forum, NGF.

Ortom, in the paper titled “Insecurity and Governance Challenges in the New Normal”, said governments at all levels must come to terms with the fact that insecurity is a real threat to the development of the country and be willing to sincerely tackle the menace.

Hence, he made a suggestion to the federal government to provide adequate funding of security agencies and also ensure continuous training of their personnel in order to be well-informed of global dynamics in the fight against insecurity.

The Governor also urged the federal government to embrace ranching as it is the global best practice of animal husbandry and to enact a law to end open grazing which often comes with attacks on farming communities by armed herdsmen militia.

He then implored all stakeholders to support in tackling security challenges.

Daily Times reports that he pledged allegiance to ensure the safety of lives and property in the state during his regime.
