Gov Mutfwang boosts Plateau security with 1,450 local combatants

The Plateau State Governor, Barr Caleb Mutfwang has charged the newly commissioned 1,450 local combatants otherwise known as Operation Rainbow, a state-owned security outfit to go after insurgents terrorising communities.

The Governor said terrorists hide mostly in communities to carry out heinous crimes, therefore it is deliberate to strengthen community-based security to support the conventional security agencies.

Mutfwang was speaking at the passing out ceremony of Operation Rainbow in Jos on Tuesday, where 1,450 operatives were fully commissioned as combatants.

According to him: “We are fully aware that effective security begins from within our communities. Accordingly, our administration has deliberately prioritized community-based security initiatives, including the strengthening of vigilante support structures, as critical partners within our broader security architecture. Your training has therefore gone beyond physical drills and tactical preparedness; it has instilled discipline, respect for the rule of law, adherence to human rights, and the principles of responsible engagement with civilians”, he said.

He reminded the operatives the importance of security in nation building and charged them to prioritise their responsibilities as security personnel rather than their personal goals.

“As you take your oath of service and step into the field, let me remind you that security remains the bedrock upon which sustainable development is built. Without peace, there can be no meaningful progress, no investment, no prosperity, and no enduring unity. This is why peace and security constitute the cardinal policy thrusts of my administration.

“As you are deployed, I urge you to conduct yourselves with the highest standards of professionalism, integrity, and restraint. You are not above the law; rather, you are its guardians and partners. Work harmoniously with conventional security agencies, traditional rulers, religious leaders, and community stakeholders. Effective intelligence gathering, collaboration, and mutual respect remain indispensable tools in our quest for lasting peace.

“Let me be clear at this juncture that Operation Rainbow was conceived primarily to protect all citizens irrespective of their faith, ethnic groups or regional background. It is not meant to witch-hunt anybody; rather, it is an all inclusive security outfit that involves and protects people of all faiths, tribes, working together to advance peace, unity and the safety of all.

“This government remains steadfast in its commitment to your welfare. We shall continue to provide the necessary logistics, continuous training, and improved welfare packages to enable you to perform your duties effectively and with confidence. As you pass out today, remember that the uniform you wear symbolizes hope, safety, trust, and responsibility. Be worthy ambassadors of your communities and shining role models to our youths. Let your conduct inspire confidence, unity, and peace across Plateau State”, Mutfwang said.
