As a result of the incessant rape cases in Niger State, Governor Babangida Aliyu, on Thursday, assented to the State House of Assembly bill seeking stiffer punishment for rapists and people engaged in sex offences.
The Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Mr. Israel Ebije said other bills passed into law and assented to were the laws that provided for the constitution of Sharia Courts in Niger State and the law to establish the Niger State Livestock and Fisheries Institute. Ebije intimated that the law seeking for stiffer punishment against rapists and sex offenders was necessary, adding that it would serve as a deterrent to perpetrators and give succor to victims.
